Phuket Is Fun For Only 2 Days – What’s Not Fun?

All right! Finally hit the beach! Our second part of the 2-week Thailand trip started from Phuket which was like a dream place to me before I landed there because it’s kinda hard to find fine beaches in China. However, it turned out that the dream place wasn’t that perfect, especially when you stay there for more than 2 days. Well, don’t get me wrong. In general, there are some very nice beaches, beautiful views and definitely some funsies to do in Phuket. Will break down the pros and cons shortly.

I know I didn’t really write all the post regarding the first part of the trip chronologically, it might be a little confusing. Let me quickly list our itinerary first before jumping into the ocean -

  • December 25 – 26, 2012 Bangkok with mom
  • December 27 – 29, 2012 Chiang Mai with mom
  • December 30 -31, 2012 Bangkok with friends (sent my mom back to Shanghai on the 30th)
  • January 1 – 4, 2013 Phuket (big mistake to stay in Phuket for 4 days!)
  • January 5 – 7, 2013 Koh Phi Phi Island (wish we spent more time there)

So on January 1, 2013, the very first day of 2013, we flew to Phuket from Bangkok in the morning. Thanks to Han who dragged me out of the comfy bed in Swissotel Hotel, otherwise I am sure we would totally miss the flight! Slept all the way on the plane due to hangovers from the night before until the hot sun in Phuket was hospitably lying on my sleepy face through the window. “Babe, we are here!”

We didn’t do much planning for Phuket and Koh Phi Phi in advance (at least not as thorough as Bangkok and Chiang Mai) because we thought that we would just be lying on the beaches and doing some water activities. However, it turned out that’s not the case in Phuket because where you choose to stay matters a lot. If you consider Phuket as your home base and go from there by boats to check out other islands, then that’s a totally different story and GOOD FOR YOU!!! But if you just plan to stay in Phuket for a few days, we would suggest you take some time and look into the beach areas first.

First things first – out of the 25 beaches in Phuket, pick your favorite one and find a hotel nearby.

Phuket_mapEach beach has it’s own different character and highlights. The most popular beaches are Patong, Karon, Kaka, Kamala, Surin, Bangtao, Mai Khao and Nai Harn where are all located on the west coast of Phuket.

For some reason, in terms of hotel, we decided to go baller on Koh Phi Phi island but go budget in Phuket so that we could still keep all of our expenses under our budget. With that said, Surin beach was out of the picture because the whole area is dubbed as high-end!

We sort of figured that Patong beach might be a bit touristy but it looked like there were more stuff to do compare to other beaches. Therefore, we found a budget hotel called AP Residence which looked close to the beach on the map via airbnb and our discovery about Phuket started off from here…

The area is undeveloped!

The first thing after checking in the hotel was to check out the beach. Similar to Bangkok, the streets in Phuket are not connected. We found out a shortcut to get to the beach from our hotel. Still took us 15+ minutes one way.

I know pretty much everywhere including well-developed places will still have some ghetto corners like this. Maybe it’s because the area we stayed in was not a nice one but we took a scooter and went through the entire Patong beach area. The non-beach part was just generally a little undeveloped. Makes sense though if they focus on developing the beach sides because tourism is the main income driving industry for the city. What’s the beach part look like? Let’s take a look!

Beach was nice but WAY TOO touristy!

Crowded Patong Beach

The beach was super crowded every day. That’s one of the reasons that we didn’t bother to check out any water activities or tours. It was raining for a whole day on the 3rd of Jan. We stayed in the hotel doing some research about Koh Phi Phi island. Basically, all the water activities you can do in Phuket can be done on the island too. We decided to wait.

BROS and Russians were everywhere!

Walking on the streets in Phuket, what’s impossible to ignore? Bros, bros and bros! Russians as well. They are just everywhere! Han and I were trying to figure out why there were so many of them in Phuket. The answer is still unknown. But there are numerous tattoo places in Phuket, which definitely makes getting tattoos on their entire bodies very easy. At this point, we pretty much placed all the bet on Koh Phi Phi island!

Sounds like we wasted the entire 4 days of our vacation, right? Not really. As one of the worldly famous beach areas, Phuket certainly has its charming part. Will show you the funsies in Phuket which you can do in 2 days in our next post. Stay tuned!

Above is just our personal opinion. If you have a different one, we are very happy to hear from you! :-)
